ABOUT ME

‘Life is a series of moments. Experiences. Memories. They piece together like a vast tapestry of stars in our individual galaxies. Music frames and amplifies these moments and helps emblazon them in our hearts for a lifetime. Let me be your guide in traversing the musical universe at your venue or special event.’ – Embelina

Deep hypnotic house rhythms with a cheeky hint of disco. Booty-shaking party classics laced with funky hip-hop jams. Smooth mid-tempo sounds or euphoric world beats. What’s your flavour? Let me be the tour guide on your next musical journey.

I'm Emily, otherwise known as Embelina or Emby... take your pick! I’m a DJ with over a decade of professional, international experience. I am someone who loves a peaceful, healthy lifestyle, striving for continual personal development and always speaking my truth. I am also a proud, loving mother to an incredible 13-year-old boy.

Like most young girls, I loved classic fairy tales as a child and Thumbelina by Hans Christian Andersen was particularly fascinating to me. It tells the story of a tiny girl no bigger than a thumb, who lives in a walnut shell. My dearest friends and family started calling me Embelina because I’m kinda tiny.

A little bit of history...

I’ve always loved music and spent many years singing in bands. My passion for EDM was ignited when my groovy Mama gave me a Leftfield CD in the late 90s. Thanks, Mumbelina! Years later while I was kicking around the Gold Coast with my former husband Dan Walker (The Beat Traffickers) and his buddy Beau Velasco (The Death Set), I was fortunate to have these two amazing artists mentor me in the art of mixing.

I was a vinyl DJ and I learned to mix before auto-sync even existed. While I wholeheartedly embrace digital technologies, I feel way too guilty to use any tools that negate the skill level required to DJ professionally. I believe there is magic in the tiny imperfections and I’m grateful for the many years I invested in honing my skills.

When I was an emerging DJ, I lived in the colourful musical hub of Sydney, which nourished a swathe of new electronic producers and DJs in the early noughties. I was fanatical about the emerging breakbeat sounds spilling over from the UK scene and I started incorporating these exciting new sounds into my sets.

I worked steadily towards my dream of becoming a pro DJ. Underground warehouse parties, private events and Sydney clubs and bars slowly gave way to festivals and residencies at uber-cool nightclubs.

With a thirst to keep progressing, I made the big move to London in 2004 where I found a home working with Paul Arnold from Fat! Records and held a residency at the highly prestigious nightclub, The End. Here I shared the wheels of steel with the most esteemed DJs in the breakbeat genre – The Freestylers, Friendly, Soul of Man, Drummatic Twins, Bushwacka, Tayo, Evil Nine, Deekline, General Midi & Aquasky. I have been fortunate to play many gigs across the UK and Europe – Portugal, Hungary, Spain, Germany and Ireland.

EDM has long been a male-dominated industry and I always strived to be a great example of female empowerment by mastering my craft and now by returning to this career as a more mature woman with a lot of life experience and some passion still firing in my belly.

Please reach out if you’re interested in a booking, or mosey on over to my blog ‘Dragonfruit Soul’, where I attempt to solve the mysteries of life and the universe. Keep smiling and I hope to see you on the dance floor soon ;)

‘Life itself is the most wonderful fairy tale.’ Hans Christian Andersen
